The International Research Centre on Atmospheric Icing and Power Network Engineering (CenGivre) was created in November 2003, in an effort to coordinate the activities of the research units on atmospheric icing at UQAC.

Icing research was initiated in 1974 by the creation of the Atmospheric Environment Engineering Team, which led to the formation of the Research Group on Atmospheric Environment Engineering (GRIEA) in 1983. The Group expanded rapidly, gave birth to the CRSNG/Hydro-Québec/UQAC Industrial Chair on Atmospheric Icing of Power Network Equipment CIGELE in 1997, followed by the creation of the Anti-Icing Materials International Laboratory AMIL in 1998, and of the Canada Research Chair on Atmospheric Icing Engineering of Power Networks INGIVRE in 2003.
